ASUS Announces Two New Thin 4K Laptops

ASUS Zenbook NX500ASUS has been extremely active with product announcements at this year’s Computex but the biggest items are probably two new laptops that they have announced that will feature 4K displays. The 4K displays are obviously a big feature but they aren’t new as several companies have already released such displays in various laptops and ultrabooks. Instead, it is how much performance they are including with these systems for how compact they are.

The first of the two laptops is the . At first glance, it looks very similar to what a MacBook Pro from Apple would look like. It features a aluminum body with a black bezel around a the display. It does have some circular hole patterns on either side of the keyboard for speakers and the swirl pattern on the back of the lid that make it look different. The system is an amazingly thin 19mm (about three quarters of an inch) design that weighs under five pounds. This makes it just slightly thicker and heavier than the MacBook Pro. The compact system does not skimp on the performance either as it comes with a Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M graphics processor. It will of course feature a SSD rather than a hard drive and lacks an optical drive which is not as much of an issue these days. The 15.6-inch display has the requisite 3840×2160 native resolution and uses IPS technology which gives it 100 percent of the NTSC spectrum. This is going to be a hot laptop for anyone that wants essentially a powerful and compact 15-inch laptop but then again pricing and availability have yet to be announced.

The other laptop is very similar to the Zenbook NX500 but the is designed for gaming and so features a black anodized aluminum body with red trim. It will feature the same 4K display as the NX500. The big difference looks to be that it comes with a faster GeForce GTX 860M graphics processor. The only drawback here is that even most desktop class graphics boards don’t have enough performance for gaming at the 4K resolutions. So realistically, most gamers will be using either 2560×1440 or 1920×1080 resolutions still depending on what quality and frame rates they want. This should be an interesting challenger to the laptop that is still a bit thinner and lighter and features a faster GTX 870M graphics processor but with a non-standard 3200×1800 resolution rather than the standard 4K/UHD resolutions.
